This video explains how therapeutic ultrasound helps patients heal faster.

When you go to the clinic for ultrasound what is that ultrasound machine really doing?   Therapeutic ultrasound is administered in either of 2 ways generally - constant or pulsed.   Constant produces heat in the tissues being heated and pulsed produces a physiological effect that we really don't understand well.  For most patients constant or continuous ultrasound therapy is not indicated where the tissues are inflamed and swelling is present.   Additional heat is contraindicated so pulsed is used generally in the acute stages of injury.  Upon inflammation of the injured tissues subsiding then heat or constant ultrasound therapy is indicated for pain control and facilitating faster healing due to increase transport of blood in and waste products out of the affected area.
